Durban Harbour: Where South Africa meets the rest of the world!

Despite the unique and perfect shape of the Durban harbour, it is natural. The harbour still resembles the shape of its original bay from decades ago. According to history, the bay was first discovered by the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama in 1497.

Due to its position and the unique shape of the bay, it soon became a major access point for trade and commerce in the country since it is conveniently placed between Maputo Bay and Algoa Bay. You can even watch as the giant container ships are led in on the harbour.

As a major harbour in South Africa, Durban harbour welcomes multiple cruise and ferry ships and one of these is the Spirit of Durban. The trips that you can have with us are one of the best pastimes that you can have while on vacation in Durban since we can offer to take you to the most popular and even the hidden spots on the coast.

If you are an avid fisherman, we can also accommodate your thrill-seeking hobbies by letting you try your hand at angling in the Indian Ocean waters by the Durban shores. If you’re here for the amazing views, then you can explore the mangrove swamp near the bay where you will find not only the splendour of the natural beauty of nature but also the jaw-dropping way that it supports its inhabitants.

You may find animal species here that you wouldn’t see anywhere else, giving you a great opportunity to meet them and witness their everyday life by the mangrove. Watch as the clear blue waters support the trees and the lives it holds As you walk along the mangrove bridge or ride a boat in its water pathway.

Boats we offer right here at Spirit of Durban

Here at Spirit of Durban, we offer two boats for cruising and tours and that is the Fat Girl and the Nawty Girl. These boats are small enough to take you to the best spots in the harbour without any hindrance, but it is big enough to accommodate at least 10 guests at once so you, your friends and your family can enjoy the beauty of the harbour together while cruising comfortably with Spirit of Durban!

Learn more about our boats and the perks that come with them below:

Fat Girl

The Fat Girl is the best boat we can offer for a group of more than 6. This boat is a Convertible sport fisher known as the Silverton. It is 10.4m or 34ft giving you and your friends a huge space to work with.

This boat is imported from the USA and is powered by 2 Yamaha 250hp motors making it one of the fastest boats we have in the harbour. The Fat Girl has been known for its smooth and comfortable ride making it perfect if you are not used to riding boats or if you simply want to enjoy your time together with friends while watching the beauty of the city from afar.

The Fat Girl also comes with a large fore and aft deck where you can lounge around and pose for pictures or get a closer look at the sea life right below you. For those wanting to catch a glimpse of the city, you can sit by the flybridge where up to 3 guests can fit.

If you start feeling tired, you can cosy up in the lounge area where a basic galley and a flush toilet are located along with a plush sofa.

To make the trip more fun, you can bring your CD or phone and play songs straight from your playlist with our sound system. Booking the skipper would include a crew and a skipper along with seating for up to 10 guests. Please be reminded that we only rent the whole boat and we don’t charge per head.

This boat is 5.9m or 19.6ft so there is still room for you to set up for whatever fun activities you want to enjoy with your friends and family.

What makes this boat popular in the harbour is that it is made with no frills like our regular cruise ship and so it is budget-friendly. It is also stable and comfortable, perfect for a leisure cruise by the Durban coast. The open deck with comfortable seating is also perfect for sharing a drink or two with your friends.

Just like the Fat Girl, this boat also comes with its own sound system so you can play any music that you want while cruising. The Nawty Girl includes a skipper and a seat for up to 6 people.
